OVERVIEW

For the year 2000, Redondo Beach provided a "super-sized" fireworks show, which lasted from 9:35 to 10:00 p.m. The aerial display blasted from a barge anchored in King Harbor, and was enjoyed by thousands of people around the Pier and near the coast.

By 8 o'clock, traffic already presented a challenge. For example, for almost a mile going east from the beach, parking areas and spaces along Torrance Boulevard were full. An attendant for the Pier parking structure near a "flat fee $7" sign waved off cars -- the lot was full.

The weather was terrific, with a bright crescent moon hanging in a clear sky (without any marine layer). However, visitors arriving in T-shirts and shorts may have been chilled by a strong wind blowing off the ocean and the lower temperature after sunset.

In fact, the wind and sea conditions turned out to be the reason that the pyrotechnic display began later than its scheduled 9:00 p.m. start. As reported in the Easy Reader, "Choppy seas delayed the barge's arrival from Wilmington [Long Beach Harbor], and a tugboat that was set to maneuver the barge into position developed steering problems." The tow to King Harbor also unfortunately soaked wiring for some of the fireworks, requiring rework before the show could start. A Zydeco band on the Pier helped pass the time during the wait.

This year's show interleaved lower altitude, intense, rapid fire sequences near the Pier with higher altitude single and clustered blasts -- plenty of "ahhh" for all.

For more information on the event, see the Easy Reader articles of June 29, 2000, p. 16 and July 6, 2000, p. 7, as well as The Beach Reporter July 7, 2000, p. 10.
