Well, this recent PC World article &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Recent antivirus tests are bad news for paid security suites (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/3336142\/software\/recent-antivirus-tests-are-bad-news-for-paid-security-suites.html\" target=\"_blank\">Recent antivirus tests are bad news for paid security suites<\/a>&#8221; (January 30, 2019) has an interesting take on the question and the status of free options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Paid security suites offer a variety of services, but their basic AV capabilities are being equaled by free apps.<\/p><p>Traditionally, Microsoft\u2019s <strong>Windows Defender<\/strong> was considered the \u201cbaseline\u201d product, one which the paid suites would have to surpass to prove themselves worthy. And Windows Defender still retains a \u201cCertified\u201d ranking, and not the \u201cTop Product\u201d award that the others have.<\/p><p>But if you rank each suite by its \u201cprotection\u201d ranking, <strong>Windows Defender<\/strong> comes in sixth out of the 20 suites AV-Test evaluated.\u00a0&#8230; <strong>Avast\u2019s free antivirus suite<\/strong> blocked everything, both zero-day and prevalent malware.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent German research house <a href=\"https:\/\/www.av-test.org\/en\/antivirus\/home-windows\/windows-10\/december-2018\/avast-free-antivirus-18.7\u201418.8-184902\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"AV-test (opens in a new tab)\">AV-test<\/a> ranked 12 products.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve written previously about PC anti-virus \/ PC security programs.
