There is nothing that can be done to prevent them, but there are things that can be done to prevent or reduce the harm they cause. Preparedness is the key to eliminating a great deal of damage and injury. The first 72 hours are critical. You need to be able to live without running water, electricity and\/ or gas and telephones for at least three days following a quake. Remember that police and fire departments will be busy with serious crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This guide offers checklists for what to do before, during and after the quake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Natural calamity can strike anywhere, at any time. As a further safety measure, fill out and carry emergency information cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prepare Family Members<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022    Learn first aid and CPR.<br \/>\n\u2022    Learn how to turn off gas, water and electricity.<br \/>\n\u2022    Learn where to take cover during an earthquake.<br \/>\n\u2022    Learn locations of nearby hospitals, clinics, fire stations, etc.<br \/>\n\u2022    Decide how and where your family will reunite if separated or if travel becomes difficult.<br \/>\n\u2022    Designate an out-of-state friend or relative that separated family members can call to report their whereabouts and condition.<br \/>\n\u2022    Conduct practice drills.<br \/>\n\u2022    Keep pet identification tags current.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Set Aside Supplies and Check Periodically<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022    Portable radios, flashlights and batteries.<br \/>\n\u2022    A one-week supply of canned or dried food and a few gallons of water in plastic bottles.<br \/>\n\u2022    Adjustable wrench to turn off gas and water.<br \/>\n\u2022    Portable stove and matches.<br \/>\n\u2022    Extra blankets or sleeping bags.<br \/>\n\u2022    Available cash.<br \/>\n\u2022    Pet food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If You Do Evacuate<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meeting Places If Separated<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">List three places where family members should plan to go if they cannot stay in or return to their home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you arrive home after the quake and no one is there, this list will provide you with places to start looking for other family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important Numbers &amp; Addresses<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the first 24 hours following a major earthquake, use your telephone only in case of an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Take With You<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medicines and first aid kit.<br \/>Flashlight, portable radio and batteries.
